Perhaps the best thing about college athletics is the rich tradition. Traditional powerhouses programs in college athletics have a long history but very few coaches. Some of the best coaches in college athletics stay there for decades. Each year that the coach is there, they continue to build on the recruiting relationships they have in place. This makes it easier for those coaches to continue to land solid recruits that keep those teams competitive each year. So how should we measure the quality of a coach? Should it be on wins? On national championships? For the sake of this article we will concentrate purely on the number of victories that each coach has obtained.

The top 3 coaches in victories all time areMike Krzyzewski, Bob Knight, and Dean Smith (respectively). Each coach has left a lasting legacy at their college.

Dean Smith coached his whole career at North Carolina, earning all of his 879 wins for the Tarheals. He played at Kansas University before becoming an assistant. As a head coach Dean Smith has 2 national championships in his lustrous career.

Bob Knight started his head coaching career at Army (later paving the way for Mike Krzyzewski to become the head coach there), before moving on to Indiana, and Texas Tech. Knight has a total of 3 national championships in his career, all coming at Indiana. Coach Knight has been controversial in his career, but recently has been flying under the radar as a broadcaster for college basketball.

At the top of our coaching mountain we find Coach K (MikeKrzyzewski). With 907 wins (and counting) coach K is standing alone atop the coaching ranks. He also has 4 national championships to his credit. The closest active coach to Coach K isJim Boeheim
With 856 wins (and counting).
