Coach Lute Olson, who spent twenty years with the University of Arizona Wildcats, boasts a coaching career winning percentage of .743. He has been honorably named the Pac-10 Coach of the Year a remarkable seven times, while guiding the University of Arizona to 16 straight 20-win seasons. This extraordinary accomplishment makes him one of only five coaches in college basketball history to notch over twenty-five seasons with at least twenty wins. His career culminated with his 2002 induction into the basketball hall of fame.
Olson stepped down from his coaching position on October 23, 2008, due to a long-standing medical condition. He was replaced, on an interim basis, by long-time assistant, Mike Dunlap.
In 2010, Olson was honored as the namesake of the newly-founded Lute Olson National Player of the Year Award. This award is presented to the best Division One college player who has actively participated in at least two collegiate seasons.
Olson leaves behind a legacy of success in the world of collegiate basketball. His string of successful seasons and Final Four births will live on as an indomitable record in which the likes of collegiate sports may never witness again. His place in the annals of college basketball will be forever sealed as a winner. You thought this was good?
